Feb 26, 2024 | Blog

Attention all residents of Sri Lanka aged 18 and above! The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has implemented a new mandate requiring everyone to register for a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) as of January 1, 2024. Don’t worry, this blog post will guide you through everything you need to know about TIN registration, making the process smooth and stress-free.

Who Needs to Register for a TIN?

If you’re 18 years old or older and live in Sri Lanka, you must register for a TIN. This applies to everyone, regardless of your employment status or income level. Additionally, if your annual income exceeds Rs. 1,200,000, you’ll need to register for income tax as well.

What is a TIN Number?

Think of your TIN as a unique tax ID assigned by the IRD. It helps the government track tax activity and simplifies tax compliance for everyone. You’ll need your TIN for various purposes, including:

  • Filing income tax returns
  • Importing and exporting goods
  • Accessing IRD services

How to Register for Your TIN:

You have two convenient options for TIN registration:

  1. Online Registration:
  1. Registration by Post or In-Person:
  • Download the Application Form for Registration from the IRD website
  • Fill out the form and submit it to the IRD Head Office or your nearest regional office.

Required Documents:

  • A scanned PDF copy of both sides of your National Identity Card (NIC)
  • If your address differs from your NIC, provide proof of your current address (e.g., utility bill)

Penalties for Non-Compliance:

Failure to register for a TIN can result in a penalty of up to LKR 50,000. Don’t risk it! Get registered and avoid unnecessary hassle.
